Pan American Games 2023

The USA abandoned the qualifying match against Uruguay with the following statement:
Statement from USA Team Handball on WNT match vs Uruguay.

Due to unplayable and unsafe conditions, the decision was made by the Women’s National Team athletes and staff to stop today’s match versus Uruguay to avoid serious injury.

“I am disappointed that we, the athletes, were forced to choose between our personal safety and competing for a spot at the Pan American Games.” – Julia Taylor, Women’s National Team Captain

“Athlete safety is paramount and our number one priority. The team felt that the conditions were unplayable and a threat to their physical well-being. I fully support the athletes in their decision to not compete under those circumstances.” – Martin Branick, CEO, USA Team Handball

Apparently the extreme humidity caused for a very slippery floor making it dangerous to play.

What happened to the USA anyway? They were quite okay 3-4 years ago but now they struggle to be competitive...

Yeah I can understand why they abandoned the match. This game should never have started and never should have continued for how long it did. Both teams should be happy to not have any (serious) injuries.
